There’s a seemingly endless wealth of unique properties hidden amongst the Airbnb’s millions of listings, but – as with any great treasure hunt – it takes time, patience, and sheer commitment to dig them up. Fret not, friends – we’re collecting and organizing the most unique stays from across the internet on our community hub for weekend trip ideas, Plans. Peep some of the most unique Airbnbs in the Northeast below.
Self-described as a “mini-CASTLE” – which feels very appropriate. If you’re willing to ball out a bit, you can live your fairy tale or medieval fantasies for a night in a castle overlooking Lake George. The cottage is part of the Highlands Castle, which has other bookable stays or can be booked in its entirety for a larger group.
Jaw-dropping awesomeness in the form of a treehouse. Find complete peace and respite high up in the trees. The house is completely off the grid, which of course only adds more value to a weekend secluded in nature. Whispering Wind books up far in advance (unsurprising for a one-of-a-kind experience), so plan a season or two in advance…
One of the listing’s photo captions reads “Bus living is exciting and funky!”, and well, that just about sums up your reasons to visit. It’s a school bus you can live in – as straightforward cool as you can get. This ain’t your rich uncle’s RV; prepare accordingly for weather and bathroom visits. There’s a twin bed and a hammock, but past 2 or 3 people will require sleeping bags.
One of the most unique Airbnbs in the Northeast – if not beyond. Expansive, eclectic, and communal rooms across two floors, with a lot of space outside for activity. Oh, and you have open use of an entire music studio in the downstairs bedroom. From experience, we can safely say this is a top candidate for a 14-friend birthday extravaganza.
Formerly a stained glass studio, and an 1800’s Swedish Congregational Church before that, this unique studio apartment is located in a historic neighborhood within the artsy Brattleboro. Featuring open space, stained glass windows, and vegetable & rose gardens to greet you on your way in/out, it’s about as quaint as it gets.
Behold: a whimsical home that feels as if it was pulled right out of the Shire or your favorite fairy tale. Nestled away in the Berkshires, you can bask in the beautiful lighting & design inside or explore the property’s lily pond, gardens, and brooks outside. This cottage is the stuff of dreams and books up far in advance, so add it to the wish list.
Pure joy is really the best way to describe the Bluebird Farm experience. An Airbnb all-star, this barn on a farm is a perfect choice for a group trip – big or small, friends or family. Expect a unique and enormously fun stay, farm animals galore, and exceptional hospitality from owners Carmen (who let us bake in her kitchen), Joe (who set up a bon fire for us, in the rain), and their son, also named Joe, who helped us plan for our large group of 15.
Cool and communal glamping option at The Outlier Inn, a Catskills farm / multi-purpose property. Besides the one bed, the rest of the group must BYOBed. In addition to the farm’s animals, gardens, and greenhouse, the property also has a recording studio, a fiber arts workshop, a vintage clothing store, and other bookable stays. For a glamping experience, it’s pretty pricey (plus has a 2 night min.), so if budget is a factor, a group of 6 or more helps make the price more reasonable (and the trip more fun).
Restored, vintage houseboat sitting in the middle of Newport Harbor – surrounded by beautiful views of Newport’s sea of yachts and featuring plenty of awesome hang space on the upper deck. We passed by on our water taxi in to Newport Folk and immediately added it to the bucket list. For most of its available season (April – October), the boat is reached via complementary water taxi.
Unique and minimal, Gatherwild’s Gypsy Caravan is a great pick for a no-frills, disconnected glamping experience for two. As part of a peaceful escape, you can explore their vegetable & medicinal herb gardens, have a cookout at communal outdoor kitchen, or even get a full body massage. The 15-acre apple-orchard-turned-ranch also has a few dreamy yurts on the property that you can book.
